KAIROS
The Vienna-based label founded in 1999 by Barbara Fränzen and Peter Oswald is dedicated to the release of new music.
KAIROS is the opportune moment. In antiquity this Greek word designated the felicitous conjunction of the here and now, the propitious and decisive moment when conditions are right for taking crucial action.
Over the past ten years KAIROS has developed a distinctive artistic profile and plans to adhere to it with a sense of purpose in the coming years as well.

A focus on unmistakable composers, providing continuing support beyond the bounds of an immediate CD production.
An entrepreneurial vision of artistic sustainability, working in opposition to the rapidly growing tendency to first recognise and then quickly forget an artist.
A view of new music as a seismograph of societal perspectives and of the various facets of our complex reality of life.
The production of recordings that are exemplary in both interpretation and sound, and thus an associated concentration on the visionary facets of a work. These often remain largely imperceptible in live recordings; thus, with few exceptions, we rarely release recordings of live performances.
A focus on the finest performers (Klangforum Vienna, ensemble recherche, Ensemble intercontemporain, Arditti String Quartet, Nicolas Hodges, Ernesto Molinari, among others, as well as recordings by the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, RSO Vienna, SWR Orchestra, WDR Orchestra, etc.)

For these policies KAIROS has received a number of important international prizes in recent years – nine awards for the most recent thirteen CDs alone. In addition, KAIROS recordings are found on the “best of” lists in the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Die Zeit and The New York Times. This is why KAIROS will dedicate itself in an uncompromising manner in the next ten years as well to the adventure of new music, in the conviction that this music is essential to life. In the anniversary month of October, we are releasing our 100th CD, a 150-minute orchestral work by Salvatore Sciarrino: incidental music to Dante’s Divina Commedia: Sui poemi concentrici for soloists and orchestra.

KAIROS ist der erfüllte, der gelingende Augenblick. Mit diesem Wort benannte die griechische Antike die glückliche Übereinstimmung des Hier mit dem Jetzt, den günstigen Moment, der schicksalhaft entgegentritt und entschieden genutzt werden will.
